Master CELPIP Speaking Task 7: Expressing Opinions for CLB 7+

6 min read

In CELPIP Speaking Task 7: Expressing an Opinion, you are asked to speak on a controversial community or social issue—such as whether cell phones should be banned in classrooms, or if cities should invest more in public transit. You have 30 seconds to prepare and a substantial 90 seconds to record your response.

Speaking continuously for 90 seconds on a complex topic is one of the biggest challenges in the entire exam. Without a solid plan, candidates often repeat themselves, run out of ideas, or lose their logical structure mid-way. To score a **CLB 7 or higher**, you must deliver a cohesive, multi-layered argument with smooth transitions and a strong closing statement.

Task 7 Golden Rule: The Concession Paragraph

To get a high score, **always dedicate 10-15 seconds to addressing the opposing view**. Using a concession structure ("While some might argue that...") shows the raters that your critical thinking and language control are highly advanced.

1. The Opinion & Argumentation Blueprint

A CLB 7+ response requires careful pacing. Structure your response into a clear introduction, two strong arguments with examples, a brief concession, and a powerful conclusion:

Part 1: Clear Thesis Statement (10-15s)

"Personally, I strongly believe that [My Stance] is the most beneficial approach. In my view, this policy would yield significant long-term advantages for several reasons."

Part 2: Argument 1 + Personal Example (25-30s)

"To begin with, supporting this stance is highly beneficial because [Reason 1]. For example, in my own experience, [elaborate on a personal detail]. Consequently, this results in..."

Part 3: Argument 2 (15-20s)

"In addition, [Reason 2] is another crucial factor. This is paramount because [detail], ensuring that..."

Part 4: Concession & Refutation (15s)

"While some might argue that [Opposing View] has its merits, I believe this is a short-sighted perspective because [rebuttal]."

Part 5: Strong Closing (5-10s)

"For these reasons, I am fully convinced that [My Stance] represents the most sensible way forward. Thank you."

2. High-Scoring Argumentative Connectors

Opinion essays require strong logical flow. Sprinkle these high-scoring connectors throughout your response instead of repeating "and" or "but":

Keep it Formal and Objective!

Even though Speaking is oral, Task 7 is a formal opinion piece. Avoid colloquial expressions like "gonna," "cool," or "you know what I mean." Maintain a professional, academic register.

Basic Boring Phrase CLB 7+ Option
"I think this is bad." "In my view, this policy would have highly detrimental consequences."
"But others think differently." "While some might argue that the alternative has its merits, I believe..."
"So we must do this." "Therefore, it represents the most sensible and logical way forward."

3. Step-by-Step Sample Response

Let's look at how to deliver a flawless 90-second response to a typical opinion prompt:

Task 7 Prompt: "State your opinion on whether university education should be completely free for all students."

"Personally, I strongly believe that university education should be completely free for all students. In my view, this policy would yield significant long-term advantages for our society.

To begin with, eliminating tuition fees removes major financial barriers for talented individuals. For example, in my own experience, many of my highly intelligent high school classmates could not attend university simply because their families could not afford the high cost. Consequently, providing free education ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute to their full potential.

In addition, a highly educated population is an invaluable asset to the national economy. This is paramount because it boosts innovation, increases productivity, and attracts global businesses.

While some might argue that funding free university would increase tax rates, I believe this is a short-sighted perspective because the long-term tax revenues generated by high-earning graduates would far outweigh the initial government investment.

For these reasons, I am fully convinced that free higher education represents the most sensible way forward. Thank you."
