In CELPIP Speaking Task 8: Describing an Unusual Situation, you are presented with a highly eccentric, strange, or futuristic illustration. 2. Relative Clauses & Vivid Imagery
Relative clauses (sentences using which, that, whose, or where) are the building blocks of descriptive speaking. They allow you to add layers of detail without creating choppy, repetitive sentences. Combining them with prepositions of place turns a vague description into a high-scoring masterpiece.
Never use slang or vague terms like "thingy," "whatchamacallit," or "stuff." If you do not know the exact term, say: "a circular metallic component," "a horizontal lever," or "a spherical glass ornament." This shows an advanced level of vocabulary and control.

Let's look at how to deliver a flawless, high-scoring response to a typical Speaking Task 8 prompt. Imagine the visual is a highly unusual futuristic bicycle.
"Hi Sarah, it's Alex! I'm calling because I am standing in a local novelty shop, and I've just spotted the most unusual bicycle that would be absolutely perfect for your eccentric collection!
To start, the bicycle has an extremely striking metallic purple frame which is curved in a wave-like shape, rather than having straight tubes. What makes it incredibly bizarre is its wheels: the front wheel is enormous and solid neon-blue with absolutely no spokes, whereas the back wheel is tiny—barely the size of a dinner plate.
