Master CELPIP Speaking Task 4: CLB 7 Predictions Template

In CELPIP Speaking Task 4: Making Predictions, you are asked to look at the same illustration from Task 3 and predict what will happen next. You have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to record your response.

This is a unique task because it requires you to be imaginative yet logical. The most common mistake candidates make is saying "I think..." or using "will" for every single sentence. This gets repetitive and limits your vocabulary score. To score a **CLB 7 or higher**, you must use **modal verbs of probability** and speculative transitions that show a high degree of grammatical control.

Task 4 Golden Rule: Cause & Effect

Every prediction must be backed by a **clue in the picture**. Don't just say "A man will fall." Say "Since the man is looking at his phone and walking towards a puddle, he **will likely step** into it." This shows excellent reasoning and coherence.

1. The Future Forecasting Blueprint

A CLB 7+ response should flow smoothly from a speculative opening sentence to three distinct predictions, each backed by visual clues:

Part 1: Speculative Opening (5-10s)

"Based on the current actions of the individuals in the illustration, I can make a few logical predictions about what will happen in the near future."

Part 2: Prediction 1 (Visual clue + Modal) (15-20s)

"First of all, looking at the [person/object], it appears that [clue]. Therefore, they are highly likely to [prediction], which will result in..."

Part 3: Prediction 2 (Visual clue + Conditional) (15-20s)

"Secondly, since the [person] is [action], there is a strong possibility that they will [prediction]. If this happens, they will probably need to..."

Part 4: Prediction 3 & Wrap-up (10-15s)

"Lastly, we can speculate that [prediction] because [clue]. In short, the scene is bound to change significantly in the next few minutes."

2. Modals of Probability & Prediction Vocabulary

To score a CLB 7+, you must show variety in how you express the future. Do not just use "will." Mix in modals and probability adjectives:

Avoid absolute claims!

Never say "The man will definitely trip and break his arm." You don't know that for sure! Instead, use softer modal phrasing: **"The man might lose his balance and trip."** This is much more natural and showing high-level speculative skills.

3. Step-by-Step Sample Response

Let's apply our future forecasting template to the park scene illustration from Task 3:

Task 4 Prompt: "Predict what will happen next in this picture."

"Based on the current actions of the individuals in the illustration, I can make a few logical predictions about what will happen in the near future.

First of all, looking at the dog in the center, it is highly likely to intercept the blue frisbee in a few seconds. The owner will probably congratulate the dog and throw it again.

Secondly, since the elderly man on the bench is reading a newspaper and the wind appears to be picking up, there is a strong possibility that his paper might get blown away. If this happens, he will definitely have to chase it down the paved path.

Lastly, we can speculate that the young jogger will soon pass by the bench. Since she is running quite fast, she might accidentally startle the dog.

In short, the scene is bound to become even more active in the next few moments."
